Geography at Our School
At our school, Geography is a vibrant and vital part of our broad and balanced curriculum. From Early Years through to Year 6, children are encouraged to explore the world around them with curiosity, wonder, respect and a growing sense of responsibility.
In the Early Years, children begin by discovering their immediate environment - noticing places, patterns and the natural wonders around them. As they move through the school, this knowledge grows into a deeper understanding of the wider world: its diverse people, landscapes, climates and cultures.
Children, in the Early Years, begin their geographical journey by exploring the places and environments that spark their imagination. Through our penguins topic, they learn about Antarctica, discovering that it is the “Coldest, driest and windiest place on Earth.” Alongside this, children take their first steps into map‑making, using simple drawings, symbols and stories to represent the world around them. These early experiences help pupils develop respect for different environments and begin to understand their place within them.
In Key Stage 1, pupils bring their attention closer to home. They explore Great Britain and its diverse geographical features, learning about the differences between cities, towns and villages. These comparisons help children understand the variety of communities within our country and develop compassion and understanding, for the different ways people live.
In Key Stage 2, children deepen their knowledge and develop greater confidence in using maps, enquiry skills and fieldwork. In Years 3 and 4, pupils learn about mountains and volcanoes, exploring dramatic landscapes and significant European landmarks. They also carry out hands‑on fieldwork by studying local rivers, observing how water shapes our environment.
By Years 5 and 6, pupils broaden their understanding even further as they study climate change and the continent of South America. They learn how climate varies from country to country and explore patterns in population density. These studies help pupils think deeply about global challenges, inspiring hope for a sustainable future and nurturing the aspiration to make positive contributions to the world they will inherit.
Across all stages, Geography enables children to ask questions, think critically and appreciate the beauty, diversity and complexity of our planet. Through engaging lessons, fieldwork, discussion and real‑world examples, we aim to inspire a lifelong interest in the world and support every child in becoming a compassionate, informed and responsible global citizen.
